Cash, Sr., and Margaret Neill Cash on April 27, 1942, in Hendersonville, North Carolina. He was called to his heavenly home on August 17, 2021, at his home place in Pisgah Forest, NC. He received his elementary and high school education at Ninth Avenue School in Hendersonville. He furthered his education by attending Northeastern University for Business Administration (Boston) for two years; and enrolled in a Professional Barbering School and became a Master Barber. Later, he worked collaboratively with his brothers in Boston in managing a Trucking Company and in establishing a Liquor Store. He was an entrepreneur in his own right—owning and operating a Convenience Store in Brevard, NC, and a club he owned and operated for dance and entertainment for the young adults in the community called the “Jazz workshop” in Pisgah Forest NC. Also, owned and operated an entertainment complex known as the “Pioneer Retreat” in Raleigh, NC. Curtis worked as a Correctional Officer in North Carolina and Virginia and retired from the Virginia Department of Corrections in 2004. Curtis moved to Pisgah Forest to get closer to family and to enjoy the beautiful mountains that surrounded him as a child while growing up in Hendersonville. Curtis was a member and supporter of New French Broad Baptist Church in Pisgah Forest, NC. He was a social justice advocate over the course of his lifetime. He participated in marches in the 60s and most recently, the Moral Monday demonstrations in Raleigh, NC. He was a founding member and first President of the Transylvania County NAACP, for which he served as President for three years and later served as Treasurer. He enjoyed nature, especially gardening, and admiring the Fall foliage in the mountains. He was an avid reader, enjoyed music and debating political issues. Earlier in life, he studied the martial arts discipline of Karate. Curtis is survived by his children: Marsha Lynn Janey (William), Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; Helen Margaret Lindsey (Carlton) Tustin, CA; Melinda Ann Tyler (Thomas) Lakewood, CA; Melissa Cash (James), Riverside, CA; and Yolanda Nicole Avery of Richmond, VA.; Grandchildren: Andrew T. Janey, Jonalyn Janey, Matthew W. Janey, Jordan L. Lindsey, Lauryn R. Lindsey, Jarred M. Edwards, Jeremy Avery, RayQuan Avery, Z’yon Gilliam; Siblings: Edith C. Sloan, Raleigh, NC. Curtis is survived by his sisters and brothers: Homer William Cash, Sr. (Barbara), Pisgah Forest, NC; David L. Cash, Stoughton, MA, and Rose C. Kittrell, Raleigh, NC; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, former colleagues, and friends. Curtis’s siblings preceded his death: Otis B Cash, Jr. John W Cash, Mary C Banks, Margaret C Hampton, Edward R Cash, Sr. Virginia C Kemp A memorial service honoring the life of Mr. Cash will be held at a later date.
